LOGAN — The Chief Logan FFA Forestry team competed at Monroe State Forest in Martinsville, Indiana, Oct. 24-26. Bethany Starlin, Justin Wilkins, Brooke Stivison, and Emma Moll represented Ohio in the career development event.
On Wednesday, the team took a 50 question, general knowledge written exam in the area of forestry science. Following the test the group created a presentation on the issues of urban forestry and presented it to a panel of judges.
On Thursday, the team traveled to the forest. Upon arrival, they completed a team practicum which included; a timber plot cruise, disease identification, forest business management activities, equipment identification, and topography map test. Individual activities followed. Each member completed forest product identification, orienteering course, tree identification, and timber cruising.
The John Deere company was the sponsor of the event. Each team was presented with a plaque, and each member received safety glasses and a hard hat for the event, which they were able to keep. In addition to the forestry equipment, they gained valuable career experience and memories they will never forget.
On Friday, all of the competing teams attended the Forestry Banquet at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. After the meal, the awards were presented. The Chiefs placed 18th in the nation. Wilkins, Stivison, and Moll all received silver ratings and Starlin received a gold rating. Our neighboring state to the southeast, West Virginia, won the event.
