LANCASTER — The Lancaster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on state Route 158 in Fairfield County. The crash occurred on July 23, at approximately 6:12 a.m.
Katelyn R. Brake, age 27, of Baltimore, was traveling south on state Route 158 in a 2009 Toyota Prius. Christopher C. Mersing, age 23, of Glouster, was traveling north on state Route 158 in a 1998 Ford Ranger when he traveled left of center and struck the Toyota Prius.
The Ford Ranger then overturned in the roadway, ejecting Mersing. The Toyota Prius traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. Brake succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Mersing was taken by Greenfield Township to Fairfield Medical Center and was later flown by AirEvac to Grant Hospital with serious injuries. Mersing was not wearing a safety belt.
Troopers from the Lancaster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol along with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department, Greenfield Township Fire and EMS, and Fairfield County Coroner Investigator Ed Breining responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
The Ohio Highway Patrol urges all motorists to use all available safety equipment when operating a motor vehicle.
