From your Bible read Joshua 1:1-9
This scripture introduces Joshua as the new leader of the people. Up until this point Joshua has been in the background. We read his name in several places of the Exodus story, but it has been Moses and Aaron who have been the leaders of the Hebrew people. God now calls Joshua to step forward and lead the people into the promised land.
Today, I want to talk about leadership. Some of you may already be thinking leadership does not apply to yourself. Well, I think it applies to each of us. Each person is a leader in their unique situation. You may not lead a group of people, but everyone leads by the example they set for others. At the very least, you are a leader in your home. You are a leader to your families. So, we must be aware of the example we set for others.
Let’s go back to God’s call of Joshua in this scripture. God calls Joshua to lead the people, and God says to Joshua, “As I was with Moses so I will be with you. I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU.”
And then in verse 6 God says, “Be strong and courageous.”
Verse 7 God says, “Be strong and very courageous.”
Verse 9 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you.”
What do you think is the point of emphasis in this scripture?
Three times it says, “Be strong and courageous.” If it says it three times, we better pay attention. And it says, “Do not be afraid, do not become discouraged, for the Lord is with you.”
If we are told to be strong and courageous, and not afraid, and not to become discouraged. That tells me that leadership will be difficult at times. In uncertain and difficult times leadership is most important. With the COVID-19 virus we find ourselves at an uncertain time that needs good leaders.
Pray for national, state and local leaders of our government. Pray for church leaders. Also, consider the example your life sets for those around you. Be a strong and courageous leader.
Verse nine ends with that wonderful promise that God always gives to those he calls. “For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
