LOGAN — Tonight, Team Hope Relay For Life’s team will host the 2020 Hocking Hills Pizza Wars.
Last year’s competition was a great success, with more than 70 members of the community participating.
The purpose of Pizza Wars is to collect money for the American Cancer Society. Proceeds raised by the event will be donated as part of the committed contribution from Team Hope.
All year long the local Relay for Life teams host fundraisers for cancer research. Team Hope is one of many teams in Hocking County that hosts fundraisers. The biggest fundraiser of the year, however, is the Relay for Life event in June.
According to Relayforlife.org, the tradition began back in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, of Tacoma, Washington, walked and ran around a track for a continuous 24 hours, raising an incredible $27,000 to donate to the ACS. Reportedly, by the next year, 340 supporters joined the 24-hour event, and eventually it grew to the point where Relay For Life now raises nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.
As the teams from Hocking County lead up to the big event, smaller events such as Pizza Wars are held to help the teams achieve their goals.
Contributing restaurants donate two pizzas each, one pepperoni and one specialty pizza of their choice. There also will be desserts, soft drinks and door prizes during the evening.
The competition will be anonymous, with the pizzas being identified by number only, participants will purchase voting tickets at the door, which will then be used to vote on which pizza participants feel is the most delicious.
This year’s event will be held at The Olde Dutch Restaurant. It is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. tonight, with all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society.
This is a public event open to the community and will include pizza, desserts, drinks and door prizes. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
