LOGAN – One of a pair of Columbus men who were arrested in March in Hocking County and charged with trafficking methamphetamine is scheduled to take a plea bargain in his criminal case.
Davontae G. Lewis, 27, was arrested March 4 in Haydenville along with fellow Columbus resident Tommy J. Wooten, 60. Hocking County Sheriff’s deputies had stopped the men’s vehicle for a traffic violation on Haydenville Road.
According to a sheriff’s report posted on Facebook, after deputies observed various “criminal indicators,” they brought in a K-9 officer to sniff the vehicle. When the dog indicated that the odor of a narcotic was present in the vehicle, this gave the deputies probable cause to search it. They allegedly found and seized nearly a pound of suspected methamphetamine, much of it prepackaged for sale. They also seized prescription narcotics, and more than $5,600 in cash.
Both Lewis and Wooten were indicted by a Hocking County grand jury on March 18. Each was charged with aggravated drug possession, a first-degree felony with a major drug offender specification and a specification for forfeiture of money; aggravated drug trafficking, a first-degree felony with a major drug offender specification and a specification for forfeiture of a cell phone; and aggravated drug possession, a fifth-degree felony.
The major drug offender specification brings with it, if the defendant is convicted, a mandatory maximum prison sentence based on the type of drug involved in the offense.
On Tuesday, according to online records of the Hocking County Common Pleas Court, the county prosecutor’s office offered Lewis a plea deal, which he accepted. Lewis has agreed to plead to the first-degree felony aggravated drug possession charge, in return for which the state will remove the major drug offender specification. The prosecution and defense will jointly recommend a sentence of five to seven-and-a-half years in prison.
A change of plea and sentencing hearing has been scheduled in Lewis’s case for July 5.
Wooten’s case is still pending.
