LOGAN — The Hocking County Board of Commissioners solidified a dog’s retirement plans during their Tuesday, May 11 morning meeting.
Hocking County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Caleb Moritz asked the board to retire Dzeck, a patrol and narcotics dog. Dzeck, as in “Zeke,” has worked for the sheriff’s office since 2015. As allowed by state law Dzeck will be purchased for $1 by his handler, with whom he will live out his life in retirement. The German Shepherd will officially retire May 30.
The board also filled the two open positions on the 317 Board, the alcohol, drug addiction and mental health services board for Athens, Hocking and Vinton counties. The board appointed Rhea Hopstetter and Tammy Norway on Tuesday.
Commissioner Sandra Ogle also read a resignation letter from Sonja Miller, administrative assistant at Hocking County EMA. Ogle commended Miller’s service and said that she will be missed.
The commissioners also heard from Athens-Hocking Recycling Center Board of Directors Vice President Allen Frederick on Tuesday. Andrea Jones, the recycling center’s board secretary, said that the recycling center has increased its ability to prevent waste from going to landfills from 8% up to 37% within the last decade.
“One of the things that’s really critical in terms of recycling is that it’s a part of the economy — in that the commodities the recycling center receives are salvageable and bring a price which enables us to hire people locally,” Jones said. “Use of our local landfills (is) absolutely critical in order to make sure that the solid waste district is adequately funded.”
On Thursday the commissioners hosted a re-bid opening for Laurelville streets during.
Sean Brooks, community development manager at Hocking Athens Perry Community Action, or HAPCAP, was there to open the bidding.
The next commissioners meeting will be Tuesday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the commissioners chambers in the Hocking County Courthouse, 1 E. Main St. Meetings are open to the public with limited capacity and livestreamed on the commissioners Facebook page at www.facebook.com/hockingcommissioners/.
