ATHENS — Troopers with the Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a three vehicle, injury crash that occurred approximately 3:55 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, on US-33 near Rainbow Lake Road.

A red 2009, Ford Focus, driven by Nicholas T. Riffle, age 24, of Racine, was traveling north on US-33. A maroon 2014, Volkswagen Passat, driven by Nathan L. Andre, age 61, of Wauseon, and a white 2008 Ford F-250 pickup, driven by Deslar J. Malone, age 72, of Racine, were both traveling south on US-33.

The red Ford Focus drove left of center, struck the maroon Volkswagen Passat head-on, and then struck the white Ford pickup. The red Ford Focus then overturned on to its top, slid off the left side of the roadway and struck a guardrail where it came to rest. The maroon Volkswagen Passat was pushed off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail where it came to rest. The white Ford pickup spun around and came to rest in the middle of the roadway facing north.

Riffle, Andre and his passenger, Patricia P. Andre, age 58, of Wauseon, all were injured. Riffle and Patricia Andre were seriously injured. All three were transported to Ohio Health O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, by Athens County Emergency Medical Services. Malone was not injured. Patricia Andre succumbed to her injuries on Aug 2 at Grant Medical Center after being transported there from O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Troopers were assisted at the crash scene by Richland Area Volunteer Fire Department, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, and Athens County Emergency Medical Services.

The crash remains under investigation.
