The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is offering a number of programs through the remainder of July, as follows:

Boch Hollow: Native garden bed tour & cleanup workshop

Thursday, July 22, 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m.

Boch Hollow State Nature Preserve, 7211 Bremen Road, Logan Ohio 43138

Difficulty: Easy-Suitable for every member of the family

Ever wanted to create a native garden bed? A Boch Hollows team will teach you how in this workshop. There are many ways to start using native plants in a garden that benefit native pollinators. You can start to incorporate native plants into your existing landscape, or you can start completely from scratch. Come tour native beds at Boch Hollow. Enjoy this hands-on learning experience and get your hands dirty. You will see shady and sunny native beds filled with beautiful native blooms and ferns. As you help clean out garden beds of invaders, you will learn how to ID the native species versus the non-natives and what species benefit from these native plants. Special native pollinator pack given for attendance and help.

Participants should dress for the weather, bring gloves and tools for gardening, bring lunch and water. This workshop is great for adults and kids over 10 years old. Participants should arrive 10 minutes before the workshop in the office at Boch Hollow. Please register for workshop so our naturalist knows how many seed packets.

Boch Hollow Turtle Trek Series: Cemetery Trail

Tuesday, July 27, 9 a.m.–noon

Boch Hollow State Nature Preserve, 7211 Bremen Road, Logan Ohio 43138

Difficulty: Average with uphill and downhill slopes

Distance: 2 miles

Come along on a 2-mile guided hike at a slower pace. We will “wander and ponder” both sides of a beautiful hardwood forest valley. The trail is strenuous, traversing many valleys and ridges.

Participants should dress for the weather, wear appropriate footwear for hiking, and bring water. This hike is great for adults and kids of all ages. Participants will meet 10 minutes before outside the office to go over protocols for hike. Please register for event.

Saltpetre Cave State Nature Preserve

Sunday July 25 and Wednesday, July 28, 9 a.m.–noon

Distance: 2 Miles

Come enjoy the cool caves of Saltpetre’s on a hot summer day. Join our naturalist as they give a guided tour of a hidden gem of the Hocking Hills region. If you enjoy hiking by cliffs, outcroppings, caves, and waterfalls this preserve has an abundance of such features. Let the SE district naturalist tell you the fascinating and rich history behind Saltpetre Cave State Nature Preserve that is dripping with Native American history and explosives. Spots are limited to 10 people to keep the traffic down to a minimum. So reserve your place today.
