COLUMBUS – It was an exciting weekend for Logan senior Alleana Brown, who would be representing the Chieftains at the OHSAA State Girls Wrestling Tournament held at The Ohio State University.
Brown is very familiar with these settings as she won the state championship a couple of years ago as a sophomore, and was the state runner-up last year as a junior. Her path to once again reaching those heights began on Friday evening in the first-round consolation matches taking place at the Schottenstein Center.
She would be taking on freshman Josey Mendoza of Gibsonburg High School, who had a record of 20-18 on the season. Brown made quick work of this match, pinning Mendoza in 30 seconds to move onto the Saturday consolation bracket match.
This win was also a milestone for Logan as Brown became the first Lady Chieftain to win a state tournament match since OHSAA began sponsoring the event.
Now it was on to Saturday afternoon where she would take on Mia Gaetjens, a junior from Mogadore. Gaetjens lost in the winners’ bracket quarterfinal to Northeastern junior Jesse Foebar, which dropped her down into this consolation bracket.
A lot was on the line as the winner here gets a spot on the medals podium. Gaetjens would come away victorious, earning the 14-2 decision to advance in the bracket and end Brown’s senior season with a record of 17 wins and 5 losses. It’s a tough end to her Logan career but she did a lot for the wrestling program and her legacy will live on in the record books. Brown will always be remembered as the first Lady Chief to reach the state tournament in wrestling and the first Logan wrestler, male or female, to win a state title.
