LOGAN — A doubleheader split with visiting Athens Post 21 last Saturday sends the Logan American Legion Post 78 junior baseball team into this weekend’s state tournament with a 4-10 record.
Post 78 downed Athens 7-5 in game one before Athens rallied for an 18-17 victory in the nightcap at Chieftain Field.
A total of 22 teams are slated to participate in the 2019 American Legion Junior State Tournament Thursday through Sunday at Beavers Field in Lancaster.
Logan, which got a first-round bye in the single-elimination event, will oppose either Sandusky Post 183 or Conneaut Post 151 at 4 p.m. Friday. Sandusky and Conneaut square off Thursday night.
A three-run fifth inning helped Post 78 win Saturday’s opening game.
Jordan Hawk singled twice while Teddy Dennis rapped a double and Trey Lewis, Luke Wolfe, Alex Harris and Jacob Hawk all chipped in a single.
An eight-run sixth enabled Athens to win a high-scoring second game.
Jacob Hawk’s two singles paced Post 78 at the dish. Jeremy Colburn doubled and Lewis, Jordan Hawk, Levi Parsons, Bradley Hartman and Glenny Harris each contributed a base hit.
Post 78 also fielded a senior team early in the season but was eventually unable to complete its schedule due to a lack of players. Logan will thus not be involved in next week’s Eighth District American Legion Tournament in Lancaster.
